We are in an era where the country has taken strides towards infrastructural growth, youth education and gender equality, but there remains much to aspire for. This is a tumultuous time dominated by social media, lowered attention spans, reduced community connections and growing concerns for mental health, especially for young people. Managed entirely by young artists from the region, the festival seeks to respond to some of these pressures by championing the therapeutic value of creative expression. Each year, over 1200 to 1500 people attend the festival events and close to 150 others join us as volunteers, mentors, and participating artists. JALAM is the first festival of its kind in Central India’s Mahakaushal region, introducing the local community to a variety of artistic forms and encouraging them to explore diverse ways of understanding and navigating the world through art. The festival encourages original thought and an engaged appreciation for the arts.
JALAM 2024 will bring together artists, writers, musicians, and art enthusiasts from across the nation. The festival will feature a diverse range of events, including the National Exhibition of Painting and Sculpture, National Art Camp of Painting and Sculpture, Photography Exhibition, Poetry Poster Exhibition, Art Talks, Book release, Poetry Recitation, Art Film and Documentary Screenings, mainstream cinema, Theatre Performance, Folk and classical Music Performance, international band and the Ityadi Awards Ceremony.
Beyond its artistic showcase, JALAM 2024 is committed to the principles of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). For the first time this year, we have made an open call inviting art students, especially from regional art colleges from MP and other states, to join us during the festival for an intensive workshop programme in their medium of choice also it is an opportunity for them to explore different sessions of art talks with reputed art critics and senior artists.
Beyond age, profession and artistic experience, the sessions are also open to local art enthusiasts who are seeking to learn new skills. In the past, through meaningful conversations and exhibits at the festival, we have contributed to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by creating awareness about safe spaces for women and children. The festival also supports local NGOs by generating employment for marginalized women artisans as well as organic lady farmers, woodwork artisans and carpenters who play a crucial role in our decor and design made mostly using recycled, scrap material. Our aim is also to recognize the role of women in art, tourism and cinema as these are the areas which specially needs to be mentioned and talked about when it comes to empower women in society.
